Easter in Mallorca: passion and devotion
Easter is an exceptional time to visit Mallorca. And the fact is that the largest of the Balearic Islands has managed, despite tourism, to preserve much of its traditions, culture, and history. During these days, the island is transformed into a scenario of religious fervour, ancestral celebrations and exquisite cuisine. In this article, from GPRO Valparaiso we will tell you everything you need to know about the most outstanding events of Easter Week in Mallorca.

The processions

The processions are the core of the Holy Week in Mallorca. These ceremonies, which commemorate the resurrection of Christ, are a medieval tradition that brings together numerous brotherhoods in all the towns and cities of the island. The celebrations begin on Palm Sunday and end on Easter Sunday.

The processions of Palma stand out for their large number and attendance, with around 18 processions marching through the streets of the city. If you also want to enjoy some processions of other towns in Mallorca, we recommend those of Alcúdia. In this northern town, the processions are lived with special devotion, in a walled environment that adds a touch of charm to the celebrations.

Devallaments

The devallaments, representations of the descent of Christ from the Cross, are one of the most emotional moments of the Holy Week. These representations take place in emblematic places during Good Friday and constitute one of the moments of greatest fervour of the celebrations.

In Palma, the devallamentof the Crist de la Sang, in the church of Hospital General, takes place in the morning. The image of this Christ of the Cross is placed accessible to all parishioners so that they can venerate it. Another devallament highly recommended is that of Pollença, in the north of the island. It dates from 1650, so it is one of the old devallaments of the island. That is why it is here where more people tend to congregate to witness one of these emotional acts.

Easter Week gastronomy

Easter in Mallorca is also an excellent opportunity to enjoy its rich gastronomy. The star products of this time of the year are the panades, pies that are stuffed of meat, peas, or fish. However, the robiols, made of sweet pastry and filled with angel hair, cottage cheese or jam, are also very popular. But both of them are a real treat for the palate!

Beaches of Mallorca

And if the weather is fine, nothing should stop you from visiting some beaches with crystal clear waters, and not very crowded during this time of the year. Mallorca is famous for its white sand beaches and turquoise waters, so can you think of a better place to relax after a few days of processions and devallaments? We especially recommend Cala Pi and Cala Comtessa, which are very close to Palma.
